Scientificadvancements made in various fields have undoubtedly increased the quality andvalue of human life. It should however be recognized that the technologicaldevelopments have also exposed us to greater risks and danger of being affectedby unknown physical, chemical and biological attacks. One such currentlyrelevant danger is from bioterrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Inaddition, we continue to expose to hazards from fire, chemicals, radiation andbiological organisms such as bacteria, viruses etc. Fortunately, simple andeffective means of protection from most of these hazards are available.Textiles are an integral part of most protective equipment. Protective clothingis manufactured using traditional textiles manufacturing technologies such asweaving, knitting and nonwovens and also by specialized techniques such as 3Dweaving and braiding using natural and man-made fibers.
Protectiveclothing is now a major part of textiles classified as technical or industrialtextiles. Protective clothing refers to garments and other fabric related itemsdesigned to protect the wearer from harsh environmental effects that may resultin injuries or death, the hazards that we are exposed to are often sospecialized that no single type of clothing will be adequate for protection.Extensive research is being done to develop protective clothing for variousregular and specialized civilian and military occupations. Providing protectionfor the common population has also been taken seriously considering theanticipated disaster due to terrorism or biochemical attacks. To read more,
