The Ahmedabad Textile Industry's Research Association (ATIRA) has won the project to set up a 'Centre of Excellence for Composites', Mr Sanjay Lalbhai told invitees at the inaugural of the 'Incubation Centre' for technical textiles set up at the institute.
Mr Labhai - Chairman of the Council of Administration at ATIRA said, “ATIRA won the bid in a national competition staying ahead of formidable bidders like IIT-Delhi, Shriram Institute-Delhi, and UDCT-Mumbai. The Ahmedabad Textile Industry's Research Association (ATIRA) has won the project to set up a 'Centre of Excellence for Composites', Mr Sanjay Lalbhai told invitees at the inaugural of the #
“This state-of-the-art centre will be set up at a cost of Rs 1.80 billion. The Union Ministry of Textiles will give a grant of Rs 250 million. The centre will also receive active support from the Government of Gujarat in the form of financial support for the construction of a new building, purchase of capital equipment and setting up pilot plant”.
He further said, “The CoE will provide services such as design & stimulation, testing & certification, preform design & development, processing including up-gradation of processes, capacity building & skill development, product & prototype development through industrial projects.
“The COE will focus on applications and product development for the mobility sector covering automobiles, mass rapid transport, aerospace & marine transport, housing & construction, defence and other industrial applications. This would result in opportunity for small, medium & large textile units for development & supply of preforms by weaving, braiding & knitting technology”.
Composite is the material of the future, which offers light-weight solutions for clean and sustainable environment without compromising on safety and other strength characteristics by use of high-performance, hybrid fibre structures.
ATIRA proactively initiated efforts and has collaborated with the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) of Fraunhofer Germany. Fraunhofer is Europe's largest application-oriented research organization that has more than 80 research units including 60 Fraunhofer Institutes, at different locations in Germany.
It engages more than 20,000 qualified scientists & engineers. The annual research budget of Fraunhofer is €1.8 billion of which €1.5 billion is through contract research. Fraunhofer research centres are located in Europe, USA, Asia and Middle East. Fraunhofer ICT recently inaugurated its first Centre of Excellence outside Germany in Canada. ATIRA would be the second such centre outside Germany.
ATIRA jointly with CEPT University is also setting up another COE exclusively to develop building material and technology with composites.
