The Ahmedabad Textile Industry Research Association (ATIRA) is developing cost-effective fire-resistant fabric that would be useful to make protective clothing for firemen.
“We are presently undertaking research to develop low priced fire-resistant work wear fabric, which would be especially useful to the country's firemen,” ATIRA Director Dr. AK Sharma informed fibre2fashion.
Earlier, ATIRA successfully developed a technology to make fire-resistant fabric for workers in the Oil and Gas sector.
“Various fibre blends were used to create a non-flammable fabric that is suitable for Indian working conditions, meets international standards and is cost-effective,” says Dr. Sharma.
“The new fabric reduced the cost of protective wear for those working in the Oil and Gas sector to Rs. 3,000 per uniform from earlier Rs. 8,000 per uniform, i.e. a 60 percent decrease in price,” he adds.
Informing about the current status of the innovated fabric for Oil and Gas sector, he says, “The fabric is now being used to prepare safety work wear for Oil and Gas sector employees in India. However, CE certification, which is mandatory for exports to Europe, is still awaited.”
ATIRA is an autonomous non-profit association for textile research. It is the largest of its kind in India for textile and allied industries.
