He attributed the all-time high orders to the Green Initiative campaign undertaken by the organization in December 2011 for popularizing geo-textiles.
During the campaign, workshops were held to inform and educate representatives of various local bodies about benefits of use of coir geo-textiles. Green coordinators carried out the campaign in Kollam, Wayanad, Thrissur and Malappuram districts and are currently working in other districts of Kerala to promote geo-textiles, he said.
The geo-textiles purchased from Coirfed would be used by various local bodies for watershed management and prevention of soil erosion projects implemented under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).
These projects are expected to generate Rs. 30 million worth of working days for NREGA beneficiaries in rural areas, according to Mr. Sajikumar.
He said Pathanamthitta district will benefit the most from the geo-textiles project.
