The material characterisation of the systems developed has included size distribution, stability in air, vacuum and different solutions and the permeation of water into the systems. Biological validation is on-going.

The researchers anticipate the final prototype will:

-Sense infection by showing a colour change
-Respond to a pre-set concentration of pathogenic bacteria, but will not respond to non-pathogenic bacteria.
-Be easy to apply.

Today, at best, standard dressings allow for infection control and supported tissue growth. If it succeeds, the Bacteriosafe solution will represent a major breakthrough in certain areas of burn wound treatment.
