The success story of Freudenberg Forschungsdienste KG continues. Following the "Land of Ideas" Award of the state of Baden-Württemberg, the Business Group, which forms part of the Freudenberg Group, has also won the Innovation Prize 2011 of Stiftung Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar (the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region Foundation). The prize was presented to researchers and developers from the region for the fifth time yesterday at the Rosengarten in Mannheim. As an expression of the innovative power of the region, a second ground-breaking project was also honored in addition to the cooperation between Freudenberg, Mektec Europe and Medical Faculty Mannheim. The Board of Trustees, chaired by MLP founder Dr. Manfred Lautenschläger, had raised the prize fund attached to the award from 35,000 euros to 45,000 euros. Freudenberg engineer Stefan König and his colleague Dr. Daniel Stefan Schock-Kusch of Medical Faculty Mannheim ("smart plaster") and radio-oncologist Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz from Mannheim ("intra-operative radiation therapy using Intrabeam") each received one of the main cash prizes of 20,000 euros.

In total, 30 entries were received in the five categories of biotechnology, information and communication technology, environmental and energy technology, materials and commodities, and life sciences and health. Two life sciences and health projects and one materials and commodities projects were nominated. Engineers Stefan König (Freudenberg Research Services) and Dr. Daniel Stefan Schock-Kusch (Centre for Biomedicine and Medical Technology, Medical Faculty Mannheim) were among the three nominees with their "smart plaster". The procedure which they have developed in Mannheim is intended to allow the measurement of organ functions using light signals and to speed up diagnostics. Together with the Centre for Biomedicine and Medical Technology at Medical Faculty Mannheim, scientists from Freudenberg and research workers from Mektek Europe have been working on this innovative method since the summer of 2009. In addition to the MRN Innovation Prize presented yesterday, the project had already received a "Land of Ideas" award from Baden-Württemberg's Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann in Stuttgart in July.
The principle is simple but highly effective. A plaster applied to the patient's skin is used to measure the concentration of a diagnostic substance previously injected and can identify malfunctions of organs such as the kidneys or liver in a very short space of time. In the case of the liver, the test can be completed in ten minutes, while kidney tests call for about two hours. Current methods require blood or urine samples to be shipped to a laboratory for testing.

The MRN special award, with a cash prize of 5,000 euros, went to chemical engineer Dr. Jan Eubeler from Frankenthal and his colleague Dr. Holger Eggers ("Innovative silo foil for agriculture").
