India approves ₹1480-cr National Technical Textile Mission

The Indian government has approved the proposal for creation of a four-year-long National Technical Textiles Mission from fiscal 2020-21 to 2023-24 with an outlay of ₹1,480 crore, textiles minister Smriti Irani told parliament upper house recently. The focus is use of technical textiles in various flagship missions and programmes, including strategic ones.

The use of technical textiles in agriculture, aquaculture, dairy and poultry; in the Jal Jivan Mission, Swachch Bharat Mission, and the Ayushman Bharat project will bring an reduce costs, conserve water and soil, result in better agricultural productivity and generate higher income for farmers apart from promoting manufacturing and export activities, an official release quoted the minister as saying in a written reply.

The use of geo-textiles in highways, railways and ports will result in robust infrastructure, reduced maintenance cost and higher life cycle of the infrastructure assets, she said.

The mission will take create innovation and incubation centres and promote start-ups and ventures. The research output will be reposited with a government trust for easy and assessable proliferation of the knowledge gained, she said.

A sub-component of the research will focus on development of bio degradable technical textiles materials, particularly for agro-textiles, geo-textiles and medical textiles, she added.
