Research on TissueGen's new biodegradable fibre is all set to get a boost with joining of the company by a renowned bioscientist Lisa A Fortier. A professor of surgery at Cornell University, Fortier has specifically focused on translational research including prevention of post-traumatic osteoarthritis. She has joined the company's scientific advisory board.

TissueGen's ELUTE fibre is a replacement for standard fibres in biodegradable medical textiles and is meant to deliver therapeutic agents directly at the surgical site. Therefore, these fibres are likely to significantly improve clinical outcomes by orchestrating healing and regenerative processes.

Fortier has has also been working on clinical application of stem cells and biologics such as platelet-rich plasma and bone marrow concentrate for cartilage repair and chronically damaged tendons.

"The work that TissueGen is doing is very exciting and has the potential to redefine how biologics may be delivered in orthopedic applications. I look forward to working with the company's scientific team as they develop clinical applications for ELUTE fiber that may enable the future of medicine," Fortier said.

Welcoming the scientist, Christopher Knowles, president, TissueGen, said, "Her invaluable expertise will guide our development of ELUTE fibre for controlled sustained delivery of sensitive biologics and pharmaceuticals in orthopedic applications."

Fortier has received several awards including the Jacques Lemans Award from the International Cartilage Repair Society, the New Investigator Research Award from the Orthopaedic Research Society, and the Pfizer Research Award for Research Excellence from Cornell University. She is also the vice president of the International Veterinary Regenerative Medicine Society, past president of the International Cartilage Repair Society, and director of the Equine Park at Cornell University.

TissueGen is a Texas-based company with more than four decades of cumulative experience in the area of biodegradable polymer fibres with broad drug delivery capabilities. Besides advanced drug delivery, its ELUTE fibres are also meant for nerve regeneration and tissue engineering. (SV)
