Japan based Nippon Shokubai will hike capacity of super absorbent polymers (SAP) and also of the raw material to produce SAP, AA at its European subsidiary facility in Antwerp, Belgium.

The plan is to build a new SAP plant with capacity of 100,000 metric tons per year and AA plant with 100,000 metric tons per annum at its Antwerp facility.

According to a Nippon Shokubai press release, the company expects steady demand for SAP, especially in Central and Eastern Europe and hence the decision to hike capacity.

Last year, Nippon Shokubai had announced that it is hiking SAP capacity at its Japanese facility in Himeji by 50,000 metric tons per annum, which is expected to go on-stream in June 2016.

The Japanese company is installing a new technology to produce SAP at the new Himeji facility and the same technology will also be implemented at its European subsidiary.

With the addition of new capacity, the company’s SAP global SAP production capacity will be 710,000 metric tons per annum and that of AA will be 880,000 metric tons per year.

It hopes to begin commercial production of the new capacity by May 2018 and is investing around €350 million to increase capacities of both, SAP and AA.

Nippon Shokubai added that this project will not influence business results of the current fiscal year ending on March 31, 2016. (AR)
