OREX, the company created from Eastern Technologies Inc., has unveiled the Protective Clothing Particulate Penetration Test, which is available free upon request on the firm's website.
The test is designed to show the various levels of protection offered by the three widely used fabrics for making protective clothing for those working in the nuclear industry.
The two fabrics – other than OREX Ultra fabric – that are used in the test are the traditional hospital scrub fabric and nylon launderable fabric.
Graphite, of the size of a typical particulate contamination, is used in the test for determining which of the fabrics provides the best protection.
The test demonstrates that particulates do not penetrate through the OREX Ultra fabric, while they pass through the holes in other fabrics.
The luanderable, woven apparels that have been used by the nuclear industry so far to protect their workforce are not very effective as they allow radioactive particulate substances to pierce through them and onto the skin of the workers, said John Steward, President and CEO of Eastern Technologies.
The aim behind developing OREX was to create a protective, single-use garment for those in the nuclear industry, he added.
OREX Ultra, which offers total barrier protection, is made from the patented Enviro-stasis fabric, and is the only apparel in the US that is certified to international standards EN 1073-2 to protect wearers from radioactive contamination, according to the company.
