Future Fibres’ multihull activity continues apace. With the A65 and MMB550 catamaran projects almost in the water, our specialist multihull team is now working on the APC 78 – Fast Cat. This 24 metre super catamaran will combine the performance of an all out racing mini maxi with cruising comforts and luxury in an impressive shape from Nigel Irens Design, penned by industrial designer Christophe Chedal Anglay.
The design of the tube section of the mast has been refined by data from a detailed aero study to provide an elegant racing profile. The composite rigging will complete the package incorporating the smallest diameter carbon rigging on the market, including a set of aerofoil diamond shrouds.
In close collaboration with the Nigel Irens Design office, legendary sailor Brian Thompson and North Sails, Future Fibres has also contributed to develop a high performance sail plan for a shorthanded crew.
Scheduled for launch in mid-2014, the APC 78 will be the first of a new breed of catamarans that closes the current gap between stripped-out racing boats and sedate, heavyweight cruisers. In the words of Future Fibres’ Multihull Project Manager, Torbjörn Linderson “Future Fibres has become a key technical partner when looking for performance and weight minimization improvements. Our close work with designers, sailmakers, technical advisors and the yard in the APC 78 project has allowed us to provide a fully integrated approach to the sail plan design and, ultimately, a superior integration between the spars, rigging and the deck”.
