Prof. Gries bags Russian award for development of fibre-based composites

Professor Thomas Gries, director of the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University, Germany, has been awarded an honorary professorship by Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) in lieu of his extraordinary scientific achievement in the development of fibre-based composites.

The distinguished professorship is awarded once a year to a deserving foreign scientist as well as a Russian citizen. This year, the first woman in space, Russian Valentina Tereshkova received the honour, too.

Historically, such honorary professorship from the MSU has been bestowed upon several Nobel laureates such as Niels Bohr.

Prof. Gries has been credited with systematic research, development and implementation of the concept of "Tailored Reinforcement Textiles" - from the basic idea up to an industrial production approach, in the process fulfilling the pre-conditions for resource-efficient production of composite components and their wide application for lightweight applications, especially in the automotive industry.

The honorary professorship for Prof. Gries is furthermore the recognition of his success in the deepening of Russian-German scientific relations, said a press release. Both the exchange of graduate students and scientists as well as guest lectures and research partnerships were initiated by him.
