Seminar on new opportunities in Aussie carbon fibre sector

Carbon fibre has been used as reinforcement in high performance composites and plastic compounds for many years. It is now entering a new phase of growth through high volume applications such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the BMW i3 and i8 electric vehicles. Many more applications, in areas such as medical devices, sports equipment and automotive, will benefit from lower prices and improved technology.

Carbon Nexus is a new carbon fibre facility located at Deakin University in Geelong, incorporating a 20 ton p.a. pilot line, a single-tow research line and a range of state-of-theart, fully equipped research laboratories. Supported by the Victorian State Government and the Australian Government, the $34m centre is being developed by Deakin University and the Victorian Centre for Advanced Materials Manufacturing (VCAMM).

Research themes include the interplay between processing conditions, molecular composition of the precursor and the structure of the resulting fibre. It has strong industry participation and has the potential to create many new opportunities for Australian industry.
