Ailing elderly patients of Taiwan can now hope to get a permanent relief from their frequently nagging urinary tract infections and dermatitis problems, thanks to a smart technologically enhanced diaper, developed by a group of Taiwanese researchers from the country's leading non-profit R&D organization Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), reported Focus Taiwan.

The smart diaper is installed with a sensing and monitoring device, which can send immediate signals to the caregivers when the cloth is wet.

The technological equipment embedded in the diaper can also send messages to cell phones or computers through wireless transmission, according to Chuang Wei-che, a researcher at ITRI.

The adult diaper, made with economically manufactured local non-woven fabrics, can be mass-produced for hospitals and nursing homes.

Founded in 1973, ITRI has aggressively researched and developed countless next-generation technologies, including WIMAX wireless broadband, solar cells, RFID, light electric vehicles, flexible displays, 3-D ICs and telecare.
