RJ Stern, the mining products division of Glen Raven Technical Fabrics, has developed a lighter weight, easy-to-install grid material for stabilizing underground coal mines.

Trademarked as "MineMesh™," the new material has received acceptance by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) of the U.S. Department of Labor as a flame resistant product for use in mines. Recent tests by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) confirmed that MineMesh, even with its lighter weight construction, is stronger than other products on the market.

"Innovation in this vital area of mine safety has enabled operators to mine coal in places that were previously considered inaccessible," said Justin Alberto, general manager of RJ Stern. "Improving rib support technology is increasingly important to the coal industry, and MineMesh will play an important role in adding to mine safety."
