The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, has nodded to partially fund the establishment of the Pallavada Technical Textiles Park, proposed to be set up at a cost of Rs. 1.17 billion near NH5 route, near Gummidipoondi in Chennai, Deccan Chronicle reports.

Under the Technology Mission on Technical Textiles sche¬me, the Central Government would provide nine percent of the overall cost of the project with an upper limit of Rs. 90 million to the state government for establishment of the park.
Considered to be an emerging area, technical textiles includes mobiltech products like parachute, nylon air bags, seat covers, buildtech products like proofing material and concrete an facade foundation, hometech products like furniture fabrics and floor and wall covering and agrotech products such as textiles for crop protection. All these products are meant for non-aesthetic uses.
Proposed to be set up on an area of 72 acres in Tiruvallur district, the park is expected to house 5 buildtech units, 14 mobiltech units, 2 agrotech units and 6 hometech units, in addition to R&D facilities and quality testing labs.
Upon commissioning, the technical textile park is expected to attract an investment of around Rs. 3.357 billion and would generate around 26,300 direct jobs for people in the surrounding regions.
The joint sales turnover of all the units in the park is expected to come to Rs. 3.94 billion per year.
Besides Pallavada, the Centre has also agreed to fund an integrated park proposed to be set up in Bagalur in Krishnagiri district of the state of Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs. 1.26 billion.
So far, Tamil Nadu has obtained a total grant of Rs. 1.3257 billion from the Centre for eight textile parks set up in diverse parts of the state.
The market size of the technical textiles sector, having a capacity to grow at an annual rate of 20 percent, is expected to grow from present US$ 13 billion to US$ 36 billion by 2016-17, which provides great opportunities for domestic consumption and exports.
Nonetheless, irregular power supply remains a major problem that is distressing majority of the textile units in Tamil Nadu.
