Automotive supplier Rheinmetall Automotive, a member of the technology group Rheinmetall, is systematically expanding its longstanding expertise in automotive lightweight engineering. Through its subsidiary KS Kolbenschmidt GmbH, the Neckarsulm-based company has now acquired a 24.9 per cent stake in Carbon Truck & Trailer GmbH (CarbonTT), Stade/Germany.

CSP Victall has got the CCE-JEC Innovation Award for its advanced composite pickup box, currently in production on Jiangling Motors Corporation's (JMC) Yuhu 3 and Yuhu 5 pickup trucks. It is the first such use of composites in the Chinese automotive industry. The Yuhu composite pickup box is 30 per cent lighter than a similar box stamped in steel.

Covestro's Maezio continuous fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites have added a new tool to automotive designers' toolbox for designing unique appearances. These have been used in the wheels of the ES8 and ES6, the all-electric SUVs from Chinese Electric Vehicle startup NIO. The wheels feature aluminum rims with opt-in carbon fibre blade inserts.
