Bangladesh has started shipping WPP cement bags (adstar bags) to India from November 2011. India is currently importing about 450 tons of WPP bags valued at US$ 0.9 million from Bangladesh each month, according to Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA).
Madina Polymer Industries Limited, Akij Group and Bengal Plastic Industries Ltd. are some of the Bangladeshi companies that are currently exporting WPP bags to cement manufacturing firms in Indian state of West Bengal.
WPP bags are widely used for packaging several items, including food grains, rice, wheat, onion, potato, fruits, sugar, powdered milk, chemicals, salt, cement, fertilizers, poultry and other items.
At present, Bangladesh annually exports around 9,000 tons of WPP bags, which earn foreign exchange revenue of nearly US$ 100 million for the country, as per the BPGMEA data.
The overall investment in Bangladesh's WPP bags manufacturing sector has surpassed Tk 25 billion. Currently, the sector is growing at 20 percent year-on-year with annual sales of more than Tk 25.5 billion.
There are about 60 WPP bags manufacturing units in Bangladesh.
