Cabot Corporation has developed the AerocladTM blanket, a flexible high-temperature insulation material formed by integrating Cabot's silica aerogel within a non-woven, inorganic fiber batting. The Aeroclad blanket delivers a dust free, flexible wrap that takes advantage of the superior thermal insulation performance and hydrophobic nature of aerogel. Cabot has created this new aerogel blanket product with exceptional corrosion-under-insulation (CUI) characteristics, and without dust, to significantly outperform the currently available competing products.
Cabot's Aeroclad blanket can be field modified and easily installed for use in a wide range of industrial applications such as pipelines, refineries, steam lines, tanks and other equipment.Cabot Corporation has developed the AerocladTM blanket, a flexible high-temperature insulation material formed by integrating Cabot's silica aerogel within a non-woven, inorganic fiber batting. Aeroclad insulation delivers more than twice the thermal insulation protection compared to conventional high temperature insulation materials such as mineral wool, calcium silicate and fiberglass. The blanket also offers significantly lower water retention and faster drying, minimizing the potential for CUI. Key attributes include:
-Highly insulating
-Hydrophobic
-Superior corrosion performance
-Dust free
-Fire resistant
-Easily cut or sewn
-Flexible
-Thin and lightweight
-Quick and easy installation
“The Cabot Aeroclad blanket delivers the unparalleled performance and benefits of an aerogel product while addressing a clear market need for dust free and superior corrosion performance,” said Matthew Greenfield, commercial manager, Energy and Industrial, Cabot Aerogel. “Cabot has built a reputation in the industry for its unmatched customer service both in the field and in insulation product design to address specific application needs. We are actively working with several partners to commercialize this product to meet the evolving requirements and demands of the global industry.”
What is Cabot aerogel?
Sometimes called “frozen smoke,” aerogel is the lightest and best insulating solid in the world. Cabot's aerogel is a hydrophobic aerogel produced as particles. Each particle consists largely of air (>95%) contained in a structure that severely inhibits heat transfer. The particles are incorporated by selected down-stream partners into a wide range of systems including subsea pipeline insulation systems, insulative coatings, building insulation boards, daylighting panels, and more. Cabot produces aerogel in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located near Frankfurt, Germany, where it began commercial production in 2003.
