For use on both land and sea, in hot or cold climates, the Land Shark increases survival time by regulating body temperature, providing protection from the harmful effects of the sun, sea and rain, and increasing visibility or stealth, depending on the wearer’s needs, said Neil Looy, president of Corporate Air Parts.
Looy first began to develop the idea for the Land Shark after reading the account of a military pilot whose plane went down during Operation Desert Storm with only a generic space blanket for survival. The space blanket was cold during the desert nights, rustled loudly in the wind, and brightly reflected light as the pilot was trying to hide from the enemy.
“I knew there had to be a better way to protect downed pilots,” said Looy, an experienced pilot himself, having flown commercial airlines, military fighters, and stunt planes in movies like Terminator 3 and Face/Off. “But the Land Shark Instant Survival Shelter is something anyone can use to stay alive on land or at sea when they’re stuck in the elements and waiting for rescue. In fact, we’ve received many letters from customers who’ve told us Land Shark saved their lives.”
On dry land, the Land Shark opens to become a spacious and waterproof thermal cocoon, enclosing the wearer even while in heavy outer clothing and boots. The shelter cinches closed using 550 paracord, which can be removed if needed. If a larger shelter is required, the Land Shark can be cut along its seams and used to form an instant overhead shelter that’s waterproof, highly visible, and offers protection from the sun’s rays.
Tough, military-grade design prevents tearing during use and its substantial material thickness of 10 mils stops the survival shelter from flapping in high winds. Once a user steps inside, the Land Shark immediately begins working against hypothermia.
Its primary weapon in the fight is a micro-thin layer of aluminized film bonded between the Land Shark’s resilient, composite reinforced, ripstop material. The aluminized film works by reflecting up to 80 percent of a user’s radiated body heat, helping them maintain their core body temperature, even in below freezing conditions.
The Land Shark is reversible with both International Orange and a digital camouflage pattern. When alerting search and rescue crews is the goal, the International Orange side is visible over great distances and offers more than 20 times the visibility of a person in just a life vest when used at sea.
A survival whistle attached to Land Shark provides an audible distress signal when visibility is limited. By turning Land Shark inside out, the digital camouflage pattern lets the wearer hide in plain sight, using the same camouflage pattern as many uniforms in the United States military.
