  • Ahlstrom has secured Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approval for its emissions reduction targets, aiming for net-zero by 2050.
  • By 2030, it pledges a 42 per cent cut in scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and a 25 per cent reduction in scope 3 emissions from 2021 levels.
  • Long-term, Ahlstrom targets a 90 per cent reduction across all scopes by 2050.

Ahlstrom, a global leader in fibre-based specialty materials, has recently received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its comprehensive emissions reduction targets, which aim to limit global warming to no more than 1.5°C.

Ahlstrom’s near-term climate targets include a commitment to reduce its scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42 per cent by 2030, using 2021 as the base year. The company also pledges to cut scope 3 emissions which encompass emissions from purchased goods, energy activities, and upstream logistics by 25 per cent within the same timeframe, Ahlstrom said in a press release.

Looking ahead, Ahlstrom has committed to a 90 per cent reduction in both scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050, along with a similar 90 per cent cut in scope 3 emissions across its entire value chain, covering areas from raw materials to end-of-life product processing.

The SBTi, a partnership of CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), promotes and verifies ambitious, science-based climate targets for companies worldwide.

“Sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and we're fully committed to our sustainability journey. Having our targets verified is an important milestone, but it’s our actions that matter. We have worked hard on Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and there is still work to be done. Regarding Scope 3, we have started the work, but especially with this target, collaboration across the full value chain is key. As a specialty materials company, we have the capabilities and responsibility to bring change through our solutions by innovating products that are safe and sustainable by design and that can reduce the carbon footprint of our customers,” says Helen Mets, president and CEO of Ahlstrom.
