Stakeholders of the Gujarat nonwovens textile industry have got together and formed the Gujarat Nonwoven Manufacturers Association- GUJNON. Dr Chandan Chatterjee, Director - iNDEXTb, Govt of Gujarat, formally launched GUJNON in Ahmedabad on December 24, 2011.
The objective of GUJNON is to promote consumption of nonwovens, to work for hike in applications of nonwovens, increase presence of nonwovens in day-to-day life and educate on the benefits. The mission of the association is to bring awareness of manifold benefits of nonwovens usage in daily life & thereby develop Gujarat as the largest manufacturer and converting base for nonwovens in India.
The challenges before the association is to create demand for nonwovens, make the industry profitable, which is incurring huge losses in its infancy stage and make people aware that nonwovens is not plastic.
The advisors of this association are Amit Agarwal, Anil Maheswari, Ramesh Vyas, Hemant Patel, Naval Sharma, Rajkumar, Parimal Patel, Sampath Nahata, Mohit shah and many more.
Mr Amit Agarwal, Honorable Secretary of Indian Technical Textiles Association educated those present, about the concept of nonwovens.
He also discussed HSN Code of nonwovens and benefits that a manufacturer can derive from the same. He also talked about the current scenario in the Indian and global technical textile and nonwoven markets.
Other topics included use of nonwoven bags from an environmental perspective, taxation on nonwovens bags, and need for the govt intervention to promote nonwoven bags in lieu of plastic bags.
He urged for government intervention to promote usage and sales of nonwoven fabrics, and bags. He dwelt on the need to organise buyer-seller meets and take care of taxation issues with regards to excise and VAT Modvat. He spoke on the need to take up the matter with individual government departments to promote and legalise sales of nonwoven materials.
He also said that if manufacturers want to arrange a workshop on nonwovens, then the Indian Technical Textiles Association (ITTA) can arrange a workshop with the help of EDANA and INDA.
Chief Guest - Dr Chandan Chatterjee said that this association has been formed to provide information to nonwovens manufacturers. Govt was looking to increase production of technical textiles in Gujarat and found nonwovens to be in the forefront, within this sector.
He highlighted that environmental issues will crop up in case of nonwovens products, so sustainability will be a key issue, which will need to be addressed.
He further said, “Government of India has set up 'Centre of Excellence' to develop the technical textiles sector, similarly government of Gujarat is also planning to set up such institutes of excellence in Gujarat”.
He also promises to provide help of the Gujarat Government to SSI units for product development and testing of innovative sustainable nonwovens products, if they collectively approached the government through the association.
He hoped that this association will also help the new generation and existing entrepreneurs to provide knowledge of technical textiles and nonwovens to increase the business.
He was also very appreciative of the role of an Ahmedabad-based b2b textile portal -fibre2fashion in setting up a new dedicated knowledge based technical textiles b2b portal -www.techicaltextile.net, which he considers to be the best in gathering and disseminating knowledge about the industry.
He also assured that Government of Gujarat will give 50 percent cost subsidy, if technical textiles manufacturer wants to organize a workshop on skill development through this association. He also pledged support of the government in hiring consultants or technologists if approached through the association.
“If any technical textiles manufacturer wants to promote their products through any conference or exhibition in India or abroad, here too the Gujarat Government will provide help”, he winded up by saying.
The meeting concluded by acknowledging, “To sustain in this market, innovation is necessary”.
