June 17th marks the inaugural home game in the brand new ballpark. The dual turf system, designed exclusively for the Hillsboro Ballpark through cooperation of D.A. Hogan & Associates and Hellas, features two different types of turf, Velocity XP and Matrix Turf, to ensure maximum playability.
Hellas Sports Construction, a newcomer in the great state of Oregon, is providing the turf for the first minor league baseball stadium in the Portland metropolitan area. President and CEO of Hellas Sports Construction, Reed J. Seaton, says of this new opportunity, “We are thrilled to bring our installation expertise and superior turf product to the Northwest League and The Hillsboro Ballpark.”
Hellas is bringing an entirely unique dual turf system to Hillsboro, specially designed by architects at SRG Partnership and D.A. Hogan & Associates’ landscape architect, Eric Gold.
In a fully collaborative installation effort with general contractor Hoffman Construction and subcontractor Bernhardt Golf, Hillsboro Ballpark’s outfield is being christened with Hellas’ original Matrix turf system, while the infield and warning track is composed of Velocity XP, a 2.5-inch deep artificial turf product. This combination of synthetic fibers lends itself to create a playing surface comparable to that of real grass, unlike any other baseball field’s synthetic turf system.
As Hellas’ flagship product, Matrix Turf delivers the most advanced turf system, ideally suited for baseball. Currently in its fourth generation, the Matrix Turf system is comprised of special monofilament yarns in different sizes, shapes and colors, creating the best traction and stability for athletes, while ensuring the highest durability and playability of any turf product in the industry.
Regarding the upcoming collaboration, Seaton states, “We are extremely pleased to work with SRG Partnership, D.A. Hogan & Associates, Hoffman Construction, and Bernhardt Golf on such a prestigious job. We hope that the level of service and quality we provide will bring our products to other local venues and baseball facilities.”
When awarding the bid, Hellas Sports Construction's extensive track record, including projects for University of California at Berkley, Cowboys Stadium, the Cotton Bowl, Baylor University, Idaho State, the Alamodome, Northern Arizona University and other prominent stadiums, played a key role in the City of Hillsboro’s choice.
Hillsboro Ballpark plans to host the only professional baseball team in the Portland metropolitan area, the Hillsboro Hops. When not in use by the Hops, the ballpark will be opening its doors to host other baseball games, as well as soccer and lacrosse matches.
