In contrast to steel, composite materials – in addition to their considerably lower weight – excel in terms of their chemical resistance, higher resistance to pressure and greater tensile strength and their heat resistance. Fiber composite material components are made up of two different primary constituents: the reinforcing fiber fabric and the embedding matrix. The fabric – which provides the rigidity for the components – can be either carbon fibers or aramid, whereas the matrix, that lends the component the desired shape, is made up by mixing resins with hardeners.
