Edana Advisory on Blotter Paper for Testing Coverstock

Following the discontinuation of Hollingsworth and Vose ERT FF3 blotter paper in late 2010, EDANA’s ad-hoc task force took the decision, in its meeting on 31st August, 2011 that the Ahlstrom Grade 989 appears to be the closest possible substitute for the discontinued paper; but that it cannot be seen as an equivalent, due to differences in its strike thru time and in its liquid absorption capacity among other, less important, factors.
In a meeting held February 15th, 2012, the task force confirmed recommendations it had proposed by then.
More testing will be pursued by the task force, aiming to determine the most effective loading factor (LF). At this time, no formal recommendation can be made regarding which LF should be used, and where the information should come from (supplier or self-determination). At present, it is recommended that users proceed in determining the loading factor themselves.
The recommendations shared with the nonwoven suppliers and converters in September 2011 are confirmed, that testing has shown that Grade 989 can be used as a substitute for the originally recommended paper.However, it should be understood that both papers are not equivalent, and that no comparison should be made between results obtained by one or the other absorbent paper. Users are encouraged to start building up their own database for further reference and comparison.
The following table on testing procedures was published in September 2011. The most recent tests by the laboratories indicate that the suggested number of layers may be adapted, and can be used with flexibility; for example, it is acceptable to use five layers instead of six, or two instead of three. Needless to say, the actual number of layers needs to be reported in the test reports.
The suggested number of layers (column 4) relates to the number of blotter paper to be superimposed to form the standard absorbent pad referred to in the respective methods.
It should be understood that this is not an obligation, but a recommendation. As this constitutes a deviation from the original, validated EDANA/INDA test methods, mention of the paper type and number of layers used should be made in any communication between vendor and purchaser.
