The Centre of Excellence for Medical Textiles established at South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) offers nearly 100 different testing services for various medical textile products.
Director of the association K.P. Chellamani said the Union Ministry of Textiles identified the association for Centre of Excellence for Medical Textiles and allocated Rs.10 crore for development of the centre. Most of the machinery were purchased and the centre had already completed seven projects.
It had signed an agreement with the University of Bolton for medical textile product development.
It had also formulated standards for nine medical textile products, such as surgical gowns, surgical drape, and perforated film absorbent dressing. The centre had also designed and fabricated two testing instruments for medical textiles.
Several companies had approached the association for guidance on investment in medical textiles. These were related to machinery for manufacturing medical textile products and the market potential for these products.
The centre had developed products such as insoles for diabetic shoes, hernia mesh, clinical heart patch, heart valve fabrics and barbed, bi-directional surgical sutures.
Mr. Chellamani said the Ministry would soon complete disbursement of the entire amount allocated for the centre and more machinery would be added to strengthen the facilities available.
