Freudenberg Filtration Technologies improves worker safety

August 20, 2012 - Germany

Since more than 365 days Freudenberg Filtration Technologies has been accident-free throughout the world and has therefore had an LDI (lost day incident) figure of zero. The LDI figure represents the number of accidents with at least one lost working day per thousand associates.

"The "Open Eyes" initiative implemented throughout the Business Group as well as many local measures and the development of an uncompromising health and safety culture throughout the organization have made a key contribution to improving health and safety," says COO Dr. Jörg Sievert, commenting on this success. "Open Eyes" is a safety initiative launched by Filtration Technologies two years ago to heighten awareness in dealing with potentially hazardous situations and "near misses" with a view to eliminating them immediately, where possible, or at least reporting them. "This makes work safer for everyone," Dr. Sievert explains.

Freudenberg Filtration Technologies has a particular commitment towards protecting the environment and ensuring the health and safety of associates. This sense of responsibility is part of Freudenberg’s corporate culture and firmly anchored in the Guiding Principles of the Group.

The “We all take care" initiative was born of this commitment and encourages every single associate to contribute his/her ideas and suggestions for improvement, thus generating a culture in which everyone feels a responsibility for safety at work and environmental protection.

Annual awards presented for outstanding projects motivate individual teams to identify with health and safety at the workplace and the protection of the environment. Positive contributions can be emulated, thus bringing continuous improvements for the entire company.

This awareness has resulted in the project "We All Help", which contributes to reduce accidents and environmental hazards, and waste of energy at Freudenberg Filtration Technologies significantly. How safe is my workplace? What procedures could be improved still further? How can we save energy? These and other meaningful questions are asked by the project of Freudenberg Filtration Technologies in Weinheim. Every day, a different associate assesses his or her workplace for 15 to 20 minutes with respect to accident and environmental risks as well as energy wastage. The following day, the associate concerned reports on the results in the morning team meeting with the production manager and suggests some possible solutions. These are then developed jointly and implemented as soon as possible. The project was honored with the 3rd Place at the annual "We all take care" award (a company-wide initiative, where the best measures to improve industrial safety will be awarded).

For 2011, the Business Group received the Safety Excellence Award in Bronze.
