SGL displays carbon fiber structural reinforcement at BAU 2013
January 15, 2013 - Germany
At BAU 2013, the leading trade fair for construction and architecture, which is running from January 14-19 in Munich, SGL Group – The Carbon Company – is showcasing innovative products from two areas: structural reinforcement with carbon fibers and energy-efficient air conditioning technology based on graphite.
The new structural reinforcement consists of carbon fiber-reinforced concrete, in which carbon fibers are used instead of steel to strengthen concrete. Carbon fibers are stronger than steel but only a quarter its weight. Since they are also corrosion-resistant, there is no need for the thick concrete outer layers required with steel-reinforced concrete.
This also saves weight. With carbon fiber-reinforced concrete, existing bridges and buildings can be sustainably repaired and new slender structures and freeform designs created. Under the brand name CARBOCRETE, SGL Group introduced this new lightweight composite for the first time in an open innovation competition at the beginning of 2012 and is currently working with partners on the practical application of this material.
In Booth 138, Hall 1, new two- and three-dimensional carbon fiber reinforcing materials can be seen, which were developed in cooperation with V. Fraas Solutions in Textiles GmbH. Also on display in the booth are new products based on chopped carbon fibers and fine-grained, ultra high or high performance concrete: NANODUR Carbon was developed in cooperation with Dyckerhoff AG for use in facades, roof structures, and noise-reducing roadway slabs.
VARIODUR Carbon ensures a stable, crack-resistant composite for special applications such as machine bases, liquid retaining bunds in the chemical industry, and high-temperature furnaces.
The second product group – cooling ceilings based on ECOPHIT – ensures more energy-efficient, ecofriendly building climate control. The starting material is high-quality natural graphite, from which lightweight expanded graphites with very good thermal conductivity are produced. Radiant cooling/heating systems based on ECOPHIT products can achieve energy savings of up to 40% compared with conventional air-conditioning systems.
Surface heating/cooling systems based on ECOPHIT also improve indoor climate and take up less space in rooms thanks to the low installation height of the elements. The recyclability of natural graphite-based products is another advantage for the “green” building market. To supply the global growth market for energy-efficient, ecofriendly building climate control, SGL Group has formed a joint venture with the Lindner Group under the name SGL Linder GmbH & Co KG. About SGL Group – The Carbon Company
SGL Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of carbon-based products and materials. It has a comprehensive portfolio ranging from carbon and graphite products to carbon fibers and composites. SGL Group’s core competencies are its expertise in high-temperature technology as well as its applications and engineering know-how gained over many years.
These competencies enable the Company to make full use of its broad material base. SGL Group’s carbon-based materials combine several unique properties such as very good electrical and thermal conductivity, heat and corrosion resistance as well as high mechanical strength combined with low weight.
Due to industrialization in the growth regions of Asia and Latin America and increased substitution of traditional with innovative materials, there is a growing demand for SGL Group’s high-performance materials and products. Products from SGL Group are used predominantly in the steel, aluminum, automotive and chemical industries as well as in the semiconductor, solar and LED sectors and in lithium-ion batteries. Carbon-based materials and products are also being used increasingly in the wind power, aerospace and defense industries.
With 48 production sites in Europe, North America and Asia as well as a service network covering more than 100 countries, SGL Group is a company with a global presence. In 2011, the Company’s workforce of around 6,500 employees generated sales of €1,540 million. The Company’s head office is located in Wiesbaden.
