April 29, 2011 - Taiwan

A symposium discussing applications and business opportunities in technical textiles is currently being held in Taipei, with experts from different countries attending.

The three-day event, co-organized by the Taiwan Technical Textile Association and the Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI), is being held from April 27 to 29.

The forum this year carries the theme “Green and Innovation” and is being attended by companies and organizations from six countries, namely Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Russia, Belarus and Taiwan.

“Technical textiles have successfully raised Taiwan's image in the world's textile arena, with products winning the business and trust of overseas customers,” said Jwo Ching-ming, chairman of Taiwan Technical Textile Association.

“Technical textile manufacturing has led to a transformation of Taiwan's textile industry and plays a critical role in ensuring Taiwan's economic growth,” said Wang Yea-kang, chairman of TTRI.

Technical textiles have applications in a wide array of industries including transportation, sports and leisure, environmental protection, medicine, construction, civil engineering, packaging and dairy and husbandry.

Last year, Taiwan's total technical textile production value was about a third of the NT$500 billion for the entire textile industry, and the production value is expected to reach NT$230 billion in 2015.

Among the featured speakers at the forum are: Professor Michael Braungart of Germany-based EPEA International Umweltforschung GmbH, and Dr. Behnam Pourdeyhimi, executive director of the Non-Woven Institute and Non-Woven Cooperative Research Center under North Carolina State University.
