Teijin begins mass production of new flame retardant

December 15, 2014 - Japan

Teijin Limited, one of the leading suppliers of high performance fibres, has begun mass production of its new phosphorus flame retardant, FCX-210, at a 1,000-tons-per-annum plant operated by chemical manufacturer, Chitec Technology, a Taiwan-based leading provider of global plastic and coating additives.

Phosphorus flame retardants are a key type of retardant and highly effective especially when added to polycarbonate and polyester resins. FG series FCX-210 answers to strong customer demand for the development of flame retardant that can also be applied to other types of resin, and does not reduce the heat resistance of materials on which it is used.

FCX-210 is a new type of phosphorus flame retardant incorporating Teijin’s proprietary molecular design technology. It enhances retardation of flame in a broad range of resins, including Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), polystyrene and nylon; materials in which conventional phosphorus flame retardants are less effective. Only a small amount of FCX-210 needs to be added, helping to maintain the original properties of base resins. It also is halogen-free, which is an increasing demand among environmentally conscious manufacturers, Teijin said in a statement.

Teijin is developing FCX-210 applications for enhanced safety and reduced environmental impact in the automotive and electronics fields. Sales are expected to reach 4 billion JPY (33.9 million USD) by 2018, according to reports.

After developing FCX-210 in 2013, Teijin signed a manufacturing license agreement with Chitec Technology, which subsequently invested in and constructed a mass production facility at a cost of 400 million TWD (12.9 million USD).

Flame retardant is a kind of functional additive that lowers combustibility of a product. Along with rapid performance improvements in office equipment, electronic appliances, and automobiles, consumers have come to expect safer and more environmentally friendly products as well.

Teijin is a technology-driven global group offering advanced solutions in the areas of sustainable transportation, information and electronics, safety and protection, environment and energy, and healthcare. Its main fields of operation are high-performance fibres such as aramid, carbon fibres & composites, healthcare, films, resin & plastic processing, polyester fibres, products converting, and IT. (GK)
