Scotland makes period products free
November 26, 2020 - United Kingdom
Scotland recently made sanitary products free. Members of the Scottish parliament unanimously passed the Period Products (Free Provision) Scotland Bill on November 24 making it legally mandatory for all public institutions to provide period products, including tampons and pads, to everyone who needs those. This is a first such step in the world.
Period products will now be available free at designated public places like community centres, youth clubs and pharmacies. The estimated annual cost to taxpayers will be £24 million, global newswires reported.
First minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon called it ‘an important policy for women and girls’. "Proud to vote for this groundbreaking legislation," she tweeted.
In 2018, Scotland started providing free sanitary products in schools, colleges and universities.
In Britain, 10 per cent of girls have been unable to afford sanitary products, a survey by the children's charity Plan International in 2017 said, according to Reuters.
Now that Britain has left the European Union (EU), by January 2021, 'tampon tax' will also be abolished, British finance minister Rishi Sunak said.
