The industry should tap services of centres of excellence and research institutions, said Sanjay Chatrath, president and CEO of Tire Cord and Polyester Yarn, SRF Limited, while speaking at a two-day conference on 'Industrial Textiles — Products, Applications and Prospects' organised by the department of textile technology and automobile engineering of PSG College of Technology, in Coimbatore.
India's per capita consumption of technical textiles is 1.7 kg compared to 10 to 12 kg in developed countries. This shows there is huge potential for the growth of this sector in the country, said Chatrath.
The Indian technical textiles industry, which is growing at 20 per cent year-on-year, is witnessing a shift from use of conventional fibres to high performance, speciality fibres, he said. Carbon fibre based composites are making rapid progress in not only aerospace and sports industries but also in textile equipment, he added.
The two-day event deliberated on nonwovens, composites, coated and automotive textiles, abrasive textiles, testing, etc. (RKS)
