Scott Bader North America exhibited high performance resins, gelcoats, bonding pastes and structural adhesives for producing composite tooling and molded parts at SAMPE Seattle 2017, organised by the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering to highlight new materials and processes, innovations and technology advancements.
Special focus was given to the Crestabond range of primer-less MMA adhesives, which are now widely used in assembly by OEMs and tier one and two manufacturing companies for a variety of structural applications and substrates, with little if any need for surface preparation or a primer. All Crestabond products are toughened, two component methacrylate adhesives, developed for bonding not only unsaturated polyesters, vinyl esters and epoxy glass and carbon fibre FRP composite parts, but also wood, balsa and synthetic foam cores, engineering thermoplastics and metals.Scott Bader North America exhibited high performance resins, gelcoats, bonding pastes and structural adhesives for producing composite tooling and molded parts at SAMPE Seattle 2017, organised by the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering to highlight new materials and processes, innovations and technology advancements.#
The Crestabond range of 10:1 and 1:1 ratio adhesives meet the bonding requirements of most assembly operations, demonstrating excellent impact, peel, shear, compressive strength and fatigue resistance properties across all bonded parts. There are now ten Crestabond grade options, offering fixture times from two-three minutes up to four hours, with gap filling up to 50 millimetres. Application can be via a manual hand gun with 400 milliletres cartridges, or using a dispensing machine and pneumatic gun with five gallon pails or 55 gallon drums of Crestabond for higher volume applications.
The company also promoted the Crestapol range of high performance urethane acrylate resins, in particular the closed mold Crestapol1250LV infusion grade, which is compatible with carbon and aramid as well as glass fibre reinforcements. According to Scott Bader, Crestapol 1250LV resin has been specified for parts where a combination of lightweight with very high toughness and strength is needed in the FRP laminate design, such as for motorsport chassis and body panels, and for competitive kayaks.
In the USA, Crestapol 1250LV has also been used in a replica aircraft development project in combination with carbon/ Innegra hybrid woven fabric reinforcements, cores and other reinforcements to vacuum infuse the outer composite skin CFRP fuselage halves which attach to the steel fuselage frame of a replica American WW2 fighter aircraft.
Most of the Crestapol grades are very low viscosity resins, designed to be processed at room temperature and to rapidly cure, with no need for post cure. The inherent toughness of the urethane acrylate chemistry provides Crestapol resins with very high mechanical performance, even at high mineral filler loadings. Crestapol resins can be processed by open molding, infusion, RTM and pultrusion, even when heavily ATH filled (up to 200phr) to meet stringent fire approvals. Laminate systems based on Crestapol resin meet a variety of fire, smoke and toxicity (FST) standards specified for buildings, rail, metro and other mass transportation applications.
