Nonwovens producer Suominen after announcing in January that it is planning to set up new wetlaid line in North America, has now said that it will probably be now, setup at its existing plant in South Carolina, USA.

“Suominen has now decided that, if the planning process proceeds as expected, the location of the planned manufacturing line would be Suominen’s existing plant in Bethune, South Carolina, USA,” it said in a statement.

As announced in January, the planned investment constitutes the most significant single initiative in Suominen’s €30–50 million investment program and supports its growth target for the period 2015–2017.

“The planned manufacturing line would contribute essentially for the execution of Suominen’s growth strategy to achieve sales of roughly €500 million by end of 2017,” project manager Saara Söderberg said.

“Bethune is ideally located in the Carolinas, the nonwovens hub of North America, and is favourably located from a logistical standpoint,” Larry Kinn, senior vice president, Operations Americas said.

“Moreover, the Bethune plant already has ongoing operations, a very talented staff, and has considerable infrastructure already in place for the expansion,” he added.

Suominen informed that it is continuing to prepare the investment project, with finalisation of the decision still pending and so will not be able to comment on the total value of the investment.

Suominen manufactures nonwovens as roll goods for wipes as well as for medical and hygiene products, which find end uses in wet wipes, feminine care products and swabs.

Suominen employs approximately 600 people in Europe and in the Americas and reported net sales amounting to €401.8 in 2014. (AR)
