FibreCoat and DBF Deutsche Basalt have won the overall prize of the 17th “IQ Innovationspreises Mitteldeutschland”. The two companies have jointly developed a new fibre material to shield electromagnetic radiation from digital end devices, medical technology or e-car batteries cheaply. These devices so far have been covered with metal fibre fabrics.

A lightweight camera drone, developed using Hexcel HexPly carbon fibre prepregs, has successfully made its maiden flight. The composite drone was developed by students from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria in Wels with composite materials supplied by Hexcel Neumarkt in Austria. Hexcel is a leader in advanced composites technologies.

INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry based in the US, and the Nonwovens Industry Magazine have announced the opening of nominations for the prestigious IDEA Achievement Awards. IDEA is the preeminent event for the nonwovens and engineered fabrics conference and exposition and will be held in Miami, Florida US, from March 28-31, 2022.

General Silicones (GS) has developed Compo-SiL technology as a green alternative to toxic leather and leatherette materials used in marine upholstery. Marine environment requires upholstery companies to rely on faux leather products based on expanded vinyl. These products comprise vinyl plastic and a high percentage of PVC, a plastic with toxicity.

Canada’s Titan has announced a new R&D project with McGill University’s Geo-Group, a group made up of graduates, researchers, technical and academic staff involved in geotechnical engineering research and teaching. Titan specialises in high quality geosynthetics, containment systems, and specialty civil engineering products that protect the environment.

The National Composites Centre (NCC) is working with cross sector organisations such as Network Rail, Airbus, Shell and Gen 2 Carbon, to show that composites can be recycled at end-of-life for use in new industry applications. Recycling of composites addresses the challenge of composite waste and reduces the environmental impact of advanced materials.

European Disposables and Nonwovens Association (EDANA) and member manufacturers of wet wipes have committed to revise on pack labelling to further raise consumer awareness on types of wipes and optimal disposal methods. EDANA and pertinent members will hold awareness raising campaigns in UK and selected EU countries, starting from Netherlands in 2022.
